An overview of mechanical aspects of earthquakes as a result of fault instability. Quantitative approaches to soil and rock strength, instability on earthquakes, landslides, land subsidence, and geotechnical aspects of oil/gas exploration are discussed. Emphasis is on the theoretical framework of mechanics of earthquake and faulting, earthquake source mechanisms, earthquake scaling relations, the seismic cycle, etc.
Note: This entire course includes discussions, assignments, course projects, and exams.
